SRDO Organized a Consultation on Challenges Faced by Male Care Leavers

May 14, 2025

The Social Research and Development Organization (SRDO), organized a consultation on Wednesday, May 14. 2025, in Karachi to discuss the challenges faced by male care leavers, young individuals who transition out of institutional care settings upon reaching adulthood. The event brought together care leavers, social workers, civil society members, and child protection professionals to share experiences and propose solutions. Participants highlighted the severe gaps in transitional support for male care leavers, who are often discharged from institutions at age 18 without adequate preparation for independent living. Many struggle with homelessness, joblessness, lack of life skills, and emotional trauma stemming from years of institutionalization. The absence of structured aftercare programs, vocational training, and housing support were identified as critical areas requiring urgent policy attention. A number of speakers including Mr. Amir Murtaza, SRDO Co-Founder, Mr. Abdul Qadir Bullo, President SRDO, Mr. Humayon Waqas, Social Worker, Ms. Rahat Khan, Psychologist, Mr. Manzoor Ahmed, Coordinator HEED Foundation, Mr. Ihsan Ahmed, a Care Leaver, also emphasized the need for building a comprehensive data system to track the status and progress of care leavers across the country. Without reliable information, the scale of the issue remains hidden, hindering the development of effective interventions. The consultation concluded with a strong consensus on the urgency of establishing transitional programs that include mentorship, psychological counseling, and skill development to support male care leavers in becoming independent and productive members of society.
